I am a Clinical Psychologist and Play Therapist. I joined the team in April 2018 having moved from the Midlands. In the team I complete assessments as well as working therapeutically with families of children who are complex and challenging at times. This work is largely influenced by Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy. Along with Andrew I have developed and will deliver the Hearts and Minds therapeutic programme for adoptive families.
I aim to help parents understand the social, emotional, developmental and neurobiological forces that occur in their traumatised child but also in their own “parent brain” and body. I also listen carefully to what parents can teach me about how life is for their family currently. My approach is to work with parents to find ways that fit for their family in order to bring about meaningful change. DDP sessions with parents and children together are the ultimate aim after this initial ‘parent only’ work. These sessions can be times of incredible conversations and moments of connection between family members which I often feel privileged to witness.
I am a parent of four children myself, now all adult, and I feel that this too adds to and colours all of my work. Having ‘survived’ parenthood that many times does not give me all the answers but I think it means that I am more likely to understand that there are loads of questions!
