Non Violent Resistance (NVR) Therapeutic Training and Support Programme for Adoptive Parents

A specialist Non Violent Resistance (NVR) therapeutic training programme for adoptive parents who have already gained some understanding and experience of NVR through previous NVR training courses or individual NVR therapeutic work.  The programme will be delivered in monthly sessions from September 2020 to March 2021 (7 sessions).  Each session will last 2 hours and provide adoptive parents with the opportunity to further their knowledge of NVR principles and embed NVR practice into their therapeutic parenting approach.  The sessions will also enable families to have a space to discuss what has gone well for them in their use of NVR, as well as a supportive and safe space to talk about elements that are not yet in place within their family and to ask questions.  The group format provides adoptive parents with the chance to meet other adoptive parents undertaking NVR, offering the opportunity to build or strengthen NVR support networks.

Suitable For:

This programme is only available to adoptive families with previous experience of attending an NVR course or having undertaken 1-1 NVR therapeutic work with an NVR practitioner.

If you parent as a couple, we strongly advise that both parents attend.  However, we appreciate that for many families this will not be realistic and you may need to alternate your attendance to fit with child care commitments.  If you are a single parent you are welcome to bring a key member of your support network.  We would expect that people commit to attending a minimum of five sessions over the programme duration, and funding has been calculated on this basis, recognising that it might not be possible for families to commit to all sessions.

Training Location:  The Centre for Adoption Support and Education, 162 Pennywell Road, Easton, Bristol, BS5 0TX

Wednesday evenings (7.00-9.00pm):  16th September, 14th October, 18th November and 16th December 2020, 13th January, 10th February and 10th March 2021.

Therapeutic Objectives for the Programme:

  • Sustained reduction of aggressive, violent, controlling and self-destructive behaviour
  • Embedding of the key NVR principles, including increased parental presence, improved de-escalation strategies, reconciliation gestures and utilising opportunities to build or strengthen an NVR support network
  • An opportunity to discuss and dispel any anxieties that NVR is ‘shaming’ of adopted children
  • Improved parental self-care to bolster resilience and wellbeing
  • Shared lived experiences of what it is like to parent a traumatised child that shows their distress in unconventional ways, and how difficult it can be to make this understood by friends, family and professionals
  • Parents feeling able to parent from a position of strength and recognise their own efforts and successes

Fee:       Per family – £318 (flat fee).  It is recognised that attendance of all sessions may not be possible for some families and the price reflects this.   Unfortunately, we cannot offer any refund for sessions not attended.
